History and Architecture Tour by Bike

Discover Stone Town, UNESCO World Heritage site since 2000 and a unique blend of history, culture, and architecture. Its cosmopolitan atmosphere is intricately woven into its architectural fabric, creating a cultural hub where African, Indian, Arab, and European influences coexist, preserving their individual identities while harmonising with a history dating back to 400 AD.

This tour commences at the Old Fort, the oldest surviving structure in Stone Town. On two wheels, we’ll explore genuine local eateries, markets, and attractions.

Exploring Colonial Footprints and Architectural Harmony

The British protectorate era had a lasting impact on Stone Town. Following the bombardment of the port area palaces, colonial architect John Sinclair rebuilt the city. Our journey will lead us to buildings designed by Sinclair, fusing Islamic and modern architectural elements, reflecting the interplay between the Sultan’s leadership and British influence. Although the Swahili architectural style has evolved over time due to Arab and Indian influences, remnants of its original form can still be found in the suburbs.

Architectural Artistry: Ajit Singh’s Legacy:

Another prominent colonial architect, Ajit Singh, left his mark on Stone Town with iconic public buildings like the Haile Selasse school. His style, more modest compared to Sinclair’s, holds architectural gems like his personal residence, affectionately known as “The Beautiful One.”

We’ll cycle to Michenzani, where the architecture represents the post-independence era.
